Fresh, New Looks For The Kitchen With Cabinet Updates

Metal coffee wall art, attractive dinnerware and accessories for the countertop impart style to the kitchen, but if your cabinets are outdated, your kitchen will look lifeless and tired. The good news is that you can bring your kitchen cabinets into the current century with a few do-it-yourself upgrades that are very affordable and easy to do. By focusing on the appearance of cabinet doors your kitchen can look stylish and fresh once again.

A Fresh Look with Paint.
Painting your cabinets is far simpler than stripping and refinishing them. Remove the cabinet hardware and doors and place the doors on a flat work surface. If you plan to switch out your present hardware with new hardware that has a different hole configuration, you should fill and sand the holes and then lightly sand the cabinet doors. Wipe them down and apply latex primer; let dry and follow with latex paint, then follow the same procedure to paint the cabinet bases.

As far as colors are concerned, light and light neutrals will give your kitchen a brighter appearance. You can also try a shade of soothing taupe for an updated look. Colored cabinets are all the rage in new cabinetry, from earthy browns and greens to buttery yellow. Browse through a kitchen shop to get ideas of trends in kitchen cabinet colors and bring the inspiration home.

Glass Alternatives.
You have likely seen the high price tag on glass fronted kitchen cabinets in home stores. It is easy to change out the wood panel fronts with glass in your existing cabinets. Visit a glass store and look at the variety of alternatives, from textured or ribbed to plain glass. Measure the panels and buy replacements in the same dimensions. Working on a flat surface, remove the wood panels by gently tapping with a rubber mallet and chisel and replace the panels with the glass, using glazier's points and glass putty to secure the glass fronts.

Get a Rich New Look with Wood Relief Carvings and Decorative Banding.
Look through local woodworking stores to find wood embellishments that can bestow intricacy and depth to the fronts of your cabinets. You'll find wood carvings in styles and sizes to fit any taste and they can be stained or painted to match the door fronts.

Thin decorative wood banding is another option for trimming out cabinets in any variety of wood, from oak to exotic. A wide choice of colors, styles and widths are on the market and they can be glued on the outline of drawers and doors to totally alter their visual appeal.

Stylish New Cabinet Hardware is the Finishing Touch.
You can finish and accessorize your fresh look with trendy hardware. From sleek chromes and brushed metals, to vintage or modern glass, wrought iron, wall clocks, stone or ceramic, you'll find just the perfect knobs and pulls to give your cabinets a totally new personality, whether you're into hip and urban, classically traditional or whimsically thematic. Or maybe you’d prefer handles shaped like musical notes to coordinate with the musical wall decor that sets the theme for your kitchen.

I found a bowl full of fuzzy mold in my kitchen - should I just throw the whole thing away?

It's a cheap ceramic bowl but then again it is part of a cheap ceramic dinnerware set (service for 8 = $19.95).

Nah just scrape out the mold and wash the bowl. If it were a wooden or plastic bowl I would trash it but not ceramic or glass. If you have allergies you should be careful not to breathe in the mold spores. I usually use a piece of newspaper to scrape it into a plastic grocery sack so I can tie it closed. Not to imply that I often find mold in my house but my kids have been known to leave gross bowls in their room.
