We're all running from place to place picking up greasy foods from the fast food drive through and slurping on shakes for many of our meals. It may be an exaggeration to say we eat fast food on the fly for lunch everyday , but we do quite often reach for fast, convenient, and satisfying things like an Oreo cookie from the cookie jar, instead of taking a moment to prepare something that might actually be nutritious.
We could even grab celery, or grapes, or a pear. Fruit only needs a quick wash and it's ready to snack on. A marinade of Italian dressing is delightful with cauliflower, celery and carrots. Research shows that we are simply not eating enough the greens and colors we need. Nutritional experts hope to wake us up to healthy eating and inspire us with five-a-day campaigns that remind us that we should be eating at least five servings daily of vegetables and fruits.
In the beginning, five servings per day appears like a lot. Including fruit in your breakfast is one easy way to increase your intake in a practical manner. Fruit can be a tasty addition to cereal, pancakes and waffles. For a snack, a banana or an apple would be great. Do you like peanut butter? Add some celery with it. Kids especially love this snack. Toss some raisins on top as well! Cheese and celery make a nice snack too. For your kids, who have a natural aversion to healthy foods, try them on different types of fruits and vegetables fixed in various ways - they're bound to like some of them. Some folks believe in bribing kids with dessert, as in, "eat that broccoli and then you can have cake, but this seems to make vegetables even less appealing. How would our society react if we tried doing the opposite instead!
What if we offered broccoli as a reward for eating dessert? There's another easy way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet - drink juice. The single problem with fruit juices is the lack of fiber in them. Children like to drink a lot of juice, which doesn't help when it comes to eating food. And juices are higher in calories than the whole fruits or vegetables.
We can no longer deny the benefits to our health of eating vegetables and fruits. Studies show that people who get plenty of vegetables and fruits reduce their chances by half of getting fourteen different kinds of adult cancers as compared to people who only eat one or two servings a day. Not only that, eating more fruits and vegetables can lower your likelihood of having a heart attack, a stroke, or developing blindness.
This is information we probably already know, however, we still ignore the advice and don't get enough fruits and veggies in our diets. Some folks claim they are too busy to chop and dice vegetables, and others claim these foods cost too much. A lot of people just make up excuses for what they want to do. Instead of taking responsibility and admitting that they just want to eat junk, they'll swear that buying fresh produce is a waste. "By the time I get ready to each that banana, it's already brown all over."
