What To Consider When Buying A Freezer
There are all types of freezers. You can choose from chest freezers and upright freezers, mini-freezers and frigobar, just to give some examples. But don´t confuse a freezer with a refrigerator. Freezers are used for storing food for longer periods of time than refrigerators. While most refrigerators also have a freezer component, they are mainly used to keep food fresh and cool.
There are many things to consider when shopping for a freezer. The yearly energy cost is one of the factors to weight. Generally speaking, chest freezers are more energy efficient than upright freezers. The reason for this is that very little cold air escapes when you open the top mounted doors.
Today freezers consume less energy than they did only a few years ago due to improvements in compressors and insulation. You can save up to $70 in yearly energy consumption by buying a freezer with an Energy Star.
Besides energy consumption, you should also look at price, size, capacity and overall design when shopping for a freezer.
Due to their shape and storage capacity, chest freezers are best suited for storing larger items and for storing items for longer periods of time. Chest freezers usually consume 15% to 20% less energy but occupy more floor space and make it harder to store samller items since they do not have shelves.
Upright freezers are easier to organize due to the shelves and are ideal to store lots of small items, but the shelves also make it harder to store larger items. Upright freezers take up less space, and are ideal for homes, especially small apartments. When buying an upright freezer it is recommended that you buy self-defrosting. Self-defrosting freezers cost more than manual defrosting but are much more convenient to operate. If you choose a manual defrosting freezer you have remember to defrost it at regular intervals to help keep the energy costs down. As a rule you should defrost your freezer before the frost gets to ¼ of an inch thick.
One final tip to help you keep the operating costs down: try to maintain the freezer full at all times. The more food you keep in your freezer the less space there is for warm air and the less you will spend on energy.
Freezer prices vary widely but you can get a freezer for as little as $450. You can shop for freezer vertical online or buy from local and national appliance retailers near you.
Can you turn a regular freezer into a glass door freezer?
I have a broken freezer that I want to turn into an incubator but the door is solid I want to know if it's possible to make a glass door for the freezer that is secure and sealed when closed so no humidity or heat can escape if so how? any help will be much appreciated :]
Upright or chest? Freezer doors are more complicated than you might think - having a magnet in the seal and a heater in many of them to keep the door from freezing shut.
Getting a new glass door is likely to be impossible.
On a chest type freezer the door is fairly plain and you could saw a hole through the door and pay for a thermal glass pane and have it installed in the hole - that would limit the heat loss.
There is so much junk - shelves, etc. - that cutting a hole is almost impossible.
As I learned in converting a frig to a shell, while old units had fiberglass insulation between two shells, modern units have a metal outer shell and a plastic liner and liquid foam is injected between them and expands and glues the two together. Removing the inner shell and insulation (which you don't have to do) is a real bear. And stripping the door frame out to put in a large glass panel would be as bad.
