Just the other day I placed a plastic plate in the microwave oven and boiled a cup of tea on top of it, the plate got so hot it cracked in two. I have always used this plate before but not in this way. Now this air is coming out of it.

What you say worries me .To be honest microwaves are so cheap these days that you might as well get a new one .My first one lasted from 1982 to 2007 but it got less and less effective.I bought a new one from Argos for about £30 and its been really good.If the air is coming out of the vents , then its ok, if its coming out of the door seal, then you need another one asap.It could be potentially dangerous.
