Refresh Your Bedroom Decor: Sew A Straight Line
If you can sew a straight line, then you can redecorate your bedroom. Just by finding some great fabric you can transform your bedroom into an oasis. You can create a number of bedroom accessories by just sewing a straight line. Pick fabrics and patterns that work well together, and create your own look with bedding and curtains.
Straight Line Curtains.
Start by measuring your windows. To decide how long your curtains should be, measure from the curtain rod to the floor, and then add the depth of the pocket plus ½ inch and the hem plus ½ inch. To determine how wide you want the fabric to be, measure the width of each window and then add an extra six inches; this will make one curtain panel. You will need two panels for the window. Take notice of the direction of the fabric's print when choosing your fabric, and be certain that it will go with other components of the room.
As you prepare your panel, first hem the sides of each panel. With the right side facing down fold ½ inch of fabric towards you and iron. Next, fold one-and-one half inches of fabric toward you to make the hem and then iron into place. Now sew a straight line down each edge of each panel to hem. On the top edge, fold over ½ inch and iron, and then fold over a pocket for curtain rod. You will then iron and sew another straight line on each panel. move to the bottom hem, fold the material over 1/2 inch and then fold over the width of the hem; iron once more. Sew your straight line across the bottom hem of each panel, and your curtain panels are completed. It is really that easy.
Table Skirt with Straight Lines.
Cover your bedside table with a table skirt for a dressy look. Choose a fabric that complements the curtains that you just completed. Give your room a less cluttered look by using a table skirt to hide items beneath the table. Simply cut the fabric to size, turn under the hem and sew.
Straight Line Bed Skirt.
You can dress up your bed using a bedskirt and disguise under bed storage bins and your unsightly box spring mattress. When constructing your bedskirt, measure the length and width of your bed, and then add an additional inch on either side. Use an old flat sheet to make the base of the skirt. Now measure from the floor to the top of the box spring to get the height of your skirt, and add an inch for the hem. Cut three lengths of your bed skirt, one for the right side, one for the left side and one for the foot of the bed, and leave a one-inch seam to connect the pieces.
Now sew the three pieces together and fold under the hem. Iron and sew the hem. Affix the bedskirt to a flat sheet, being cautious to line up the corner seams with the corners of the sheet. If you prefer to leave the bed skirt panels open, then you can hem each side before attaching.
